If you met someone, at random, out of everyone in the world, would you be able to talk with them? Perhaps you could order a drink, but could you discuss the things that are important to them or to you? Any person may have something important to say, but we won't know unless we can talk together.

Se vi renkontus iun, hazarde, el ĉiuj en la mondo, ĉu vi povus paroli kun li? Eble vi povus mendi trinkaĵon, sed ĉu vi povus priparoli la aferojn kiuj gravas al li aŭ al vi? Iu ajn homo povas havi ion gravan por diri, sed ni ne scios sen ke ni povu paroli kune.

Learning even one normal language can take years - not only are languages complicated by their histories, with more exceptions than rules, they also depend on a lot of shared experience. It's possible to learn to speak like a native, but slowly, and there are thousands of languages in the world!

Lerni eĉ unu normalan lingvon povas bezoni jarojn - lingvoj ne nur estas komplikitaj de siaj historioj, kun pli da esceptoj ol reguloj, ili ankaŭ dependas de multe da kunhavata sperto. Eblas lerni paroli kiel denaskulo, sed malrapide, kaj ekzistas miloj da lingvoj en la mondo!

Esperanto is not a normal language. It was intentionally planned and constructed, so that it should be easy to learn but able to express any idea. The grammar is well-defined, the vocabulary is as small as possible. Just as importantly, Esperanto speakers learn to speak clearly, thinking about whether their words will be understandable, and trying to honestly understand the words of others.

Esperanto ne estas normala lingvo. Oni intence planis kaj konstruis ĝin, por ke ĝi estu facile lernebla, sed povu esprimi iun ajn ideon. La gramatiko estas bone difinita, la vortstoko estas kiel eble plej malgranda. Same grave, esperantistoj lernas paroli klare, pensante pri ĉu iliaj vortoj estos kompreneblaj, kaj provante honeste kompreni la vortojn de aliuloj.
